Background of the Study
Workplace bullying is a serious issue that affects individuals in various professional settings, including healthcare environments. For nursing students, particularly those in clinical placements, exposure to workplace bullying can have detrimental effects on their mental health, professional identity, and academic performance (Idris & Sanusi, 2023). Bullying in the workplace can take various forms, including verbal abuse, physical intimidation, and emotional manipulation, and can occur between students, faculty, or healthcare staff.
In nursing education, where students often rotate through clinical placements, the nature of their interactions with healthcare professionals may expose them to a hostile work environment. Mental health challenges stemming from bullying, such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress, can hinder nursing students' ability to learn, perform clinical tasks, and develop professional competencies (Adeleke & Fawole, 2024). At Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, nursing students’ exposure to workplace bullying may be a hidden issue that significantly affects their well-being and academic success. Therefore, investigating the impact of workplace bullying on nursing students’ mental health is essential for improving student support systems and promoting a healthy educational environment.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing awareness of workplace bullying in healthcare settings, its specific impact on nursing students’ mental health remains underexplored in Nigerian teaching hospitals. At Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, the prevalence of workplace bullying among nursing students during clinical placements is unclear. The mental health consequences of such bullying, including anxiety, depression, and a reduction in academic performance, are also poorly understood. Addressing this gap is crucial to providing effective support and improving the overall educational and professional experiences of nursing students.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the prevalence and types of workplace bullying experienced by nursing students at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital.
2. To examine the impact of workplace bullying on the mental health of nursing students.
3. To explore the coping mechanisms employed by nursing students in response to workplace bullying.
Research Questions
1. What are the types of workplace bullying experienced by nursing students at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital?
2. How does workplace bullying affect the mental health of nursing students?
3. What coping strategies do nursing students employ to manage the mental health effects of workplace bullying?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nursing students at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital experience workplace bullying.
2. Workplace bullying negatively impacts the mental health of nursing students.
3. Nursing students employ various coping mechanisms to manage the mental health effects of workplace bullying.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nursing students at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, specifically examining the prevalence, types, and mental health effects of workplace bullying. The study will not explore other forms of bullying or external factors influencing mental health. Findings may not be generalizable to other healthcare institutions or nursing students in different contexts.
